The Wedgwood factory has produced some of the finest examples of ceramic art. It is the most researched and documented pottery of all, appealing to collectors and enthusiasts worldwide. The Wedgwood pottery has produced many wares – earthenware, basalts, jaspers and china. The pottery continues to thrive today and the quality remains high.

Josiah Wedgwood I (1730-1795) has been described as the most influential figure in the history of Western ceramics. Not a surprising accolade when you consider that he produced innovative and stylish wares of such high quality that they were not only extremely fashionable, but much copied in England as well as the rest of Europe and America.

Josiah Wedgwood was born into a family of potters and he possessed a natural flair when it came to art. In 1754 Wedgwood went into a five-year partnership with one of the best ceramicists of the time, Thomas Whieldon, who encouraged him to experiment and introduce improvements in manufacture. Josiah was a natural market-orientated innovator, so the climate of the industrial revolution suited him well. He set up his own factory in Burslem in 1759. Seven years later Wedgwood formed a partnership with his cousin, Thomas Wedgwood, together with businessman and friend, Thomas Bentley.

In 1771 Wedgwood built his own factory called Etruria, which he initially used for the production of his ornamental vases. Later, the manufacture of other wares was transferred to this site and in 1782 it was the first factory to install a steam powered engine. After Josiah’s death in 1795 his descendants carried on the business at the Etruria site until the factory was relocated to Barlaston, near Stoke-on-Trent. It is now a member of a group together with Waterford crystal and Royal Doulton.

Wedgwood’s first important innovation to the pottery world was the introduction of creamware – a development of cream-coloured earthenware already well established in Staffordshire. The range was sophisticated in decoration and style and of high quality, despite being mass-produced and it was copied all over Europe. Creamware was generally used for tea and coffee services. It was hand-painted or decorated with moulded designs and transfer prints. Queen Charlotte was so impressed with a creamware tea service made by Wedgwood that she appointed Josiah royal supplier of dinnerware – hence the new title of ‘Queensware’.

In 1768 Wedgwood developed a fine black porcelain known as black basalt, another innovation which proved to be a huge commercial success. The Wedgwood factory could hardly keep up with the demand for black basalt items. It was particularly popular with 18th Century ladies who loved the striking contrast of the black basalt and their fine white hands.

Among the earliest items made from the basalt material were gems, seals, cameos and intaglios (gems with incised designs). The versatility and strength of black basalt led to the manufacture of a wide range of wares such as vases, teawares, busts and other ornaments, as well as tableware, candlesticks and medallions. The black basalt surface was also idea for hand-painting with encaustic enamels to emulate classical Etruscan pottery designs, an innovation which was the first and only patent Wedgwood ever took out, in 1769. From 1773 the plain black was known as ‘basaltes’, now shortened to ‘basalt’ and this term is applied to all bodies of this type, whether they are made by Wedgwood or another manufacturer.

Probably the most famous and popular of Josiah’s creations is jasperware, which was introduced around 1777. It has been in production for over 200 years and has been described as the most important invention in the history of ceramics since porcelain. Inspired by antique cameos and Roman glass and tombs, jasperware is a form of unglazed stoneware with many designs based on antiquity, or drawings by contemporary artists such as John Flaxman.

It took Wedgwood years of experimentation to perfect his design for this durable, unglazed stoneware. Jasper is white in its natural state and is stained with metallic oxide colouring agents. The most common shade is pale blue, but dark blue, sage green, lilac, crimson, brown, yellow and black were also used.

Objects made of jasper included vases, tableware, plaques, cameos and portrait medallions. One of the best known pieces is probably the outstanding reproduction of the Roman Portland Vase and this soon ensured that jasperware became the most sought-after decorative pottery in Europe. Wedgwood’s first copy in black and white jasper was so accurate that when the original vase was accidentally smashed in 1845 while on loan to the British Museum, it was successfully restored using Wedgwood’s model as a guide. First editions of these replica Portland Vases are now museum exhibits and one can be seen in the British Museum in London.

In the 20th century Wedgwood employed many cutting-edge designers, including Daisy Makeig-Jones, Keith Murray, Eric Ravilious and John Skeaping, although they kept producing traditional items alongside the more modern wares. Daisy (1881-1945) was one of the chief designers at Wedgwood during the 1920s and she had a powerful influence on the design policy at Etruria. Daisy is famous for her ornamental range known as ‘Fairyland Lustre’. These items have a dark coloured ground printed with various colours and gilding, depicting imaginary landscapes and figures.

Some of the rarer designs fetch very high prices, despite the fact that they were mechanically produced. During 1916 and 1923 Daisy also produced a number of amusing nurseryware patterns such as ‘Chicken’, ‘Thumbelina’, ‘Golliwog’ and ‘Rabbits’.

Wedgwood responded to Art Deco by employing the services of the prominent architect Keith Day Pearce Murray (1882-1981), who had a very distinctive, modern style. Murray is famous for his range of bold, geometric forms in muted shades and plain, simple patterns. Colours normally found include matt blue, grey, white, straw and shades of green. Many of the Murray shapes were being made well into the 1950s – sometimes these can be found with handcraft decoration and some were adapted to be used as commemorative wares.

The 1930s witnessed illustrator Eric William Ravilious (1903-1942) produce a variety of wares for Wedgwood, such as commemorative wares (including a coronation mug for Edward VIII), a Zodiac set, a boat race cup and bowl, patterns for dinner and teaware, lemonade sets, but most notably the Alphabet Nursery range. Due to the restrictions imposed by the outbreak of war, Ravilious died before many of the wares printed with his designs could be produced in the 1950s. He was killed whilst working as an official war artist.

Most collectors tend to focus on the work of a particular designer rather than the pottery as a whole. The thing to remember is that whatever you decide to collect in the Wedgwood range means that you not only collect items of high quality, but that you own a little piece of celebrated British history.

      Wine Decanter Types

Adding a wine decanter to your wine bar area will add depth and class to wine drinking. Wine decanters not only make red wines taste better, but they offer a very attractive vessel from which to serve wine to your visitors. Wnie decanters are part of the waterford crystal collection who are part of the wedgwood and royal doulton group (for now).

A decanter is a type of vessel that is used for holding decantation results. Decantating is the process where liquid from another vessel is poured into the decanter in order to separate a small volume of liquid that contains sediment from a larger volume of relatively clear liquid. In the process of decantating, the sediment is left in the original vessel and the clear liquid is transferred to the decanter, sometimes a muslin filter is used. From the decanter to the glass to you.

Wine is a type of liquid that often must be decanted in order to remove excess sediment. All red wines, particularly young red wines, benefit from the that takes place during the decantating process. An optimal decanting process involves trickling the wine down the walls of a decanter, which imparts fuller flavor while removing the unpleasant edge of the wine.

Most wine decanters are ornate and tall containers that are made to be very attractive vessels from which to serve wine. Wine decanters may come with a stoppered lid. Additionally, some wine decanters come with a built in rod that aids the decanting process.

Most wine decanters have a very upright and tall shape and are made of glass so that the process of decanting may be seen. One of the most popular materials to make glass wine decanters from is lead crystal. It should be noted, however, that lead crystal is no longer recommended for use.

Lead crystal is created by adding lead oxide to molten glass. This lead glass is manufactured because it increases the index of refraction over that of normal glass. This means that lead crystal has a much more ‘sparkly’ appearance than regular glass, how ever it is considered bad to use lead crystal as the lead seeps into the wine and that is poison.

Though many people still use lead crystal decanters, I long ago gave mine away and have since switched to regular glass decanters, to avoid lead poisoning. If you think about it, most people have the same liquid sitting against the lead crystal for years at a time plenty of time to absorb more than a healthy amount of lead, in my opinion.

Popular makers of lead crystal decanters are Waterford Crystal, Steuben Crystal, Baccarat Crystal and Steuben Crystal. These manufacturers of fine lead crystal decanters and other items have perfected the art of stunning lead crystal designs. If you opt to go with a traditional lead crystal decanter for your wine or liquor, I’d go with one of the tried and tested lead crystal manufacturers. Crystal is also availible lead free.

Improve The Taste Of Any Wine.

Waterford crystal glasses make wine taste better, I cannot explain this, it just does, there is a big difference when the correct shape glass is used too. Waterford Crystal is deservedly the most acclaimed crystal ware in the world. There are many imitations, but none matches Waterford glass for design, cut and clarity.
Waterford is part of the Wedgwood Royal Doulton Group, these items may become rare items as the company having financail problems in the presant credit crunch.

Waterford crystal resonates easily, crystal glass has a higher refractive index than ordinary glass. Light kinks when it goes from the air into glass and again when it passes out of the glass into air. The higher the refractive index, the more the light kinks. White light is made up of red, blue, green and yellow light. These all have different properties so are kinked by different amounts. It is THIS that gives cut lead crystal its distinctive bright appearance.

Waterford crystal also feels softer to the touch than ordinary glass and there are many who are convinced that wine tastes better from a crystal glass than an ordinary moulded one. It is certainly a more pleasant experience overall, because the cut lead free crystal glass interacts with the light passing through the wine in such an attractive way.

Waterford crystal is hand-cut by craftsmen. Every glass is different and you will find small amsymetries in the cut design as the craftsman has adjusted the design to fit the space he has left.

Crystal is not always cut and facetted. Modern designs are emerging that are also attractive, but in a different with unquie artistic style.
Crystal glass is used in chandeliers for its refractive properties. The light appears to come through the crystal with different colors. With any chandelier it is important to use clear light bulbs, rather than frosted ones, to get the intense light source necessary.

Wedgwood China A Brief History

Wedgwood china begins in 1730 with the birth of Josiah Wedgwood to a family who manufactured pottery. At six years old, Josiah was an apprentice and by 14 he had suffered a bout of smallpox that weakened his right knee. By 1760, Josiah had his own factory and had been experimenting with different formulas of porcelain, clays and glazes and technological advances in the art of transferring designs to the finished product. In 1765 he manufactured a complete set for Queen Charlotte, advertised himself as the ‘potter to the Queen’ and his business took off.

As you may well know the Wedgwood group bought out Royal Doulton and Waterford Crystal now January 2009, the company faces financial problems as they hope to be bought out.

Josiah’s crowning achievement was his creation of Jasperware. Jasper is translucent clay that marries the basalt and Josiah’s original formulas to produce a dense, homogeneously colored stoneware. After more than 10,000 failed experiments with various clays and glazes, Jasperware was launched in 1775 to overwhelming success, especially to his customers in the new democracy of the United States of America. Josiah stated shortly thereafter, ‘there was no item too rich or too costly for Americans.’

Wedgwood died in 1795 and the business was left to his sons, who, having been brought up wealthy, had absolutely no interest in running it. The job fell to a nephew, Tom Byerly who struggled greatly with the burden of running a business he had little love for. The next 25 years proved difficult for the company and Josiah II took over to turn things around by restoring the formulas and business standards set by his father. Needless to say, constant economic turmoil, wars and growing competition made the 1800′s very difficult and it wasn’t until the 20th Century, under the leadership of Josiah V that things began to improve.

Streamlining production facilities, aggressive worldwide marketing especially in America, and exclusive designs, Wedgwood China products began gaining prominence in the industry. In 1966, Wedgwood’s shares were introduced into the London Stock exchange and since that time, the company has been involved in aggressive expansion. The assets of Susie Cooper, Royal Tuscan, William Adams, Franciscan, Mason’s Ironstone, Waterford, and Rosenthal have been merged with Wedgwood to form the Wedgwood group. Josiah Wedgwood I would be proud.

The Unique Features Of Doulton Figurines

Royal Doulton figurines have a special position among figurines collectibles, they have carved a place in that niche. You might also have wondered about their history and price range as well. It is worthwhile to learn a few things about them. That will help you when you plan to buy some or make a gift of them to someone.

From dinnerware to exquisite giftware, there is something here for everyone. The Royal Doulton figurine collection itself consists of thousands of designs and they are popular the world over. Every figurine features significant, intricate details that are loved and cherished by innumerable collectors.

The company began in England in 1815, producing stoneware bottles and sewer pipes. In course of time, the pottery line changed with the times and began producing tableware and collectibles. Then the production of figurines began. However, the process by which a figurine is created has not changed much since then. From the sketch phase to the final painted details, the figurines require a team of experts all of whom possess an exceptional eye for detail.

One of the most popular figurine lines is known as the Pretty Ladies collection figurines. They feature various types of women in elegant attire, many Victorian-inspired. Other pieces include characters such as the Balloon Man and Nurse, and mini-figurines. The animal, holiday and musical ornament figurines are also available. Another significant part of the figurine line is the Disney Showcase, featuring replicas of princesses, fairies and loveable characters.

Royal Doulton Bunnykins collection is a great starting point for children. The earliest Bunnykins character was drawn in 1934 by Sister Mary Barbara Vernon, daughter of the factory manager at the time. Five years later, the first figurine was released, modeled by Charles Noke, a renowned artist. Bunnykins pieces are available in figurines, collectibles and tableware, including dishes, silverware, and cups.

By joining the International Collectors Club, collectors receive a free figurine and have the opportunity to purchase exclusive pieces. A bridal registry is available to help new and avid collectors increase their inventory. This service is free of charge and allows gift-givers the opportunity to make valuable contributions to a collection without any fear of making a duplicate, rather expensive, purchase.

Every design begins with an idea, brought to life by master modelers. Once a sample model has been constructed, it is passed on to the molder, who produces moulds in a variety of shapes and sizes. The bone china is poured into the moulds, where it sits to dry until each piece is ready to be assembled, and the figurine is then subject to a series of firings before being painted or sprayed by a professional artist. The entire process can take anywhere from several months to a year to complete.

Now you have seen the time, effort and care that go into the making of each collectible figurine. So if you buy one, it is in fact your way of expressing solidarity with a noble line of artistry. It will also enrich your drawing room, beckoning you and your guests into the world of dreams and imagination.

Putting Patterns on Porcelain

China patterns on porcelain china. Some, like decoupage, waterslide decals and air-dry paints like Delta Air-Dry PermEnamel are within the reach of any home crafter.

Other, chinal patterns like dye sublimation printing, transfer printing and hand-glazing high-fired pottery require substantial investment in equipment and are best suited to well-capitalized businesses and artists’ cooperatives.

The two classic ways of putting china patterns onto porcelin are hand-painting and transfer printing, still exist today, hand painted china patterns have an individuality about them. In addition, there is a high-tech version of waterslide decals used commercially which consists of screen-printing decals with glazes and applying the china pattern decals to the porcelain. In each case, the pottery is high-fired before decorating with the china pattern to at least cone 6. [Cone is a measure of heat absorption resulting from heat applied over time. Cone 6 translates to between 2165 and 2269 degrees F (depending on how fast the kiln heats - or ramps - up).] Such high-firing produces the hard almost-translucent quality of genuine porcelain. Then the piece is decorated with a china pattern and lightly fired repeatedly to melt and fuse the glazes to the porcelain.

Incidentally, the term ‘porcelain’ has been applied more and more broadly as new techniques developed. Ask any potter to define ‘porcelain’ and he will likely give you the classic definition. To a potter, genuine porcelain is high-fired (cone 6 or higher) white clay that is at least somewhat translucent. It has a large proportion of kaolin clay, with the remainder being primarily feldspar and silica. This clay composition accounts for the pure white gleam of porcelain.

Artisans who paint china patterns on porcelain (rather than actually make it) refer to three grades of porcelain: hard-paste, soft-paste, and bone china. They all contain kaolin but only hard-paste has feldspar and silica and is high-fired. The high temperatures cause the body and the glaze to fuse. When hard-paste porcelain is broken, it is impossible to distinguish the body from the glaze.

Soft-paste porcelain adds ground glass or frit (material for glass that is not yet fused and vitrified) and is fired to between cone 01 and 1 (1999 to 2109 degrees F). Because soft-paste porcelain is fired at lower temperatures, it does not completely vitrify and remains slightly porous. When soft-paste porcelain is broken, you can distinguish a grainy body covered with a glassy layer of glaze.

Bone china has bone ash added to the kaolin and vitrifies (becomes glass-like) somewhere between cone 2 and cone 5 (2034 to 2205 F). Though not as hard as true porcelain, bone china is more durable than soft-paste porcelain. The bone ash greatly increases the translucence of the porcelain, and there china patterns.

Finally, go to a tile store and look at their ‘porcelain’ tiles. If you turn them over, you will see base clay ranging from white to brown to gray. The definition of ‘porcelain’ in the tile industry has nothing to do with the clay content or level of firing. Rather, tile manufacturers define as ‘porcelain’ any tile fired to the point where it absorbs less than 3% moisture.

Replacing Discontinued China

There’s Hope for that Broken Tea Cup or plate

Tracking down a replacment, a company that tracks down discontinued china, silver, glassware and collectibles. Winters lost the teapot from the tea set her husband bought her before they were married, as well as several pieces of her Royal Doulton wedding china, in the 1994 Northridge earthquake. She had lost other pieces of wedding china in a 1971 earthquake as well, and had decided it was time to make her collection complete again.

Unfortunately, Royal Doulton no longer manufactured Winters’ pattern. A friend suggested she contact Replacements Ltd. "They found cups, saucers and a cake plate right away," she says, adding she was very impressed by the way the china was packed and shipped, as well as the quality of the pieces she received. However, the company advised her that she might be in for a wait on the teapot. "Every so often, I would call them and check to see if I was still on the list," laughs Winters. "They always told me they were still looking for me."

Indeed, Replacements has about 1,000 "dish detectives" who are constantly scouring flea markets, garage sales and estate auctions for items requested by customers. "If we don’t have it, we will do everything that we can to try to find it," says company spokesman Liam Sullivan.

But there is a very good chance that the Greensboro, N.C.-based business will already have what customers are looking for. They have an inventory of more than 9 million pieces in stock, representing 175,000 different patterns, and the list is constantly growing. "We discover a new pattern just about every day," says Sullivan.

As pieces come in, employees inspect each one and give it a grade, then assign it to a spot on one of the 50,000 shelves in the warehouse, which is the size of more than four football fields. In the showroom, the Great Wall of China spans 40 feet and displays hundreds of china patterns. The display area is open to the public, and hosts thousands of visitors every year.

Those looking to complete their set of china or silver simply call the company or visit its Web site armed with the name of the pattern they’re looking for and the pieces they need. If you don’t know the name of the pattern, you can compare it to pictures on the Web site, or call and describe it to a customer service representative who will help identify it.

Bob Page, founder of Replacements, started the company in 1981 as a logical extension of his weekend hobby of scouring flea markets and estate sales looking for tableware. He started getting requests from people asking him to look for pieces they wanted, and from there a business was born.

Replacements has tracked down china for the rich and famous, including Sen. Ted Kennedy, Barbara Walters, Charlton Heston, Betty Ford and author Anne Rice, also come to the company looking for dishes. However, it’s stories like Winters’ that make the business so fulfilling, says Sullivan.

"This is a very emotional subject," says Sullivan. "These are more than dishes, they’re part of people’s lives, part of their family history," he says. "We’re really replacing memories."

Winters would agree. Although it took some time, Replacements found her a new teapot just in time for the holidays. "I kept longing for that teapot," she says. "Now I can fully enjoy my china."

Fine Bone China Cleaning and General Care

Royal Doulton Tableware

Fine Bone China also needs to be cleaned, has someone passed down their fine bone china to you? Did you invest in Royal Doulton china may be a beautiful porcelain or ceramic dish set? If so, you will want to preserve it well, and leave it for future generations to enjoy. There are several things that you should and should not do with your Royal Doulton tableware or dinnerware. Take a look at these tips so that you can preserve your expensive fine bone china royal doulton or Royal Albert set for years to come.

Fine Bone China Cleaning Royal Doulton Dinnerware

If you wish to clean stains or dried food from fine bone china, soak them in warm soapy water for several minutes. With a light duty scrubbing sponge, gently wipe away any stuck on food. Do not scrub aggressively or use scouring pads, heavy duty scrubbers, or harsh cleansers. If the stain is still hard to remove, soak it longer.

For tea stains, use four cups of water with about two tablespoons of chlorine bleach. Let the tea cups soak for a few minutes, and then rinse them well.

For scrape marks left by forks and knives, use a gentle metal cleaner.

It is quite alright to use the dishwasher for you porcelain dinnerware (or tableware), but make sure that you use the fine china cycle on low heat. Do not place the items too close together; they should not touch during the cycle. Be sure to use a quality detergent as well.

Things to avoid

     * Naturally, you will want to always handle your Royal Doulton fine bone china with the upmost care. So many scratches, chips, cracks, and breaks can be avoided if you take your time when serving, using, washing, and storing your doulton dishes. Be careful.

     * You should not use your fine bone china dinnerware to reheat food. Don’t put it in the microwave or on the stove. While it is true that this pottery can handle high temperatures, you will still risk cracks and deformity.

     * Be careful not to create a temperature shock with your porcelain dinnerware. If you will be serving very hot food, warm the plates with tap water first. Applying hot food to cool porcelain dishes can cause cracks and breaks.

Meals Into Events

Dinnerware at the first of what most historians agree is the modern world, the years between 1815 and 1830, the most lavish dinner in the best homes in England consisted of only two courses-trifling by our standards. Of course, each course regularly consisted of twenty-five different dishes spread all over the table! The first course consisted of soups, platters laden with meats of all kind, whole fish, pies, and vegetables. The second course was "lighter"-wild game, ham. poultry, puddings and sweets. The Diners "skirmished" among the plates, taking a bit of everything.

Just imagine the serving pieces needed to host such a spread not to mention the table settings! The amount of storage space alone would require a butler’s pantry the size of a modern garage, few private hostesses could manage such a selection of food today, and just as well, imagine the outcry from doctors at such massive amounts of rich food!

Not needing large dinner sets, soup tureens and meat platters by the dozen these days, the modern hostess can afford to be choosier about the dinnerware she buys. New brides and distinctive hostesses have long considered Gearys to provide the highest quality table settings available, hand selected from around the globe. Browsing amongst brand names that have graced the tables of popes and noblemen is a lovely experience.

There is cinnerware designs to suit any style, from the most time-honored to the most ultra-modern. Set your table in the gorgeous style of those 19th century epicurean giants or serve your meals on something a little more forward looking. From incredibly fine hand painted plates featuring natural subject to the simplest white dinnerware, you can find plates to set the finest of tables.

Luxurious dinnerware elevates a simple meal into an event to be enjoyed at length. Graceful table settings create a mood of distinction and make any occasion more noteworthy. With the best China and porcelain, there is no such thing as an everyday meal!
