 Royal Doulton bone china is steeped in tradition, creating fine china since 1815 in England, founded by John Doulton, John Watts and Martha Jones.  Figurines, vases, decorative pieces and jugs played a prominent role in the success of the of the Doulton kilns and they became a popular supplier of stoneware and ceramics. As well as the general public, Queen Victoria ordered pieces sent to Windsor Castle. The company was the first to be awarded the Queens (Elizabeth II) Technical Achievement Award in 1966 for its contribution to china manufacturing.

Royal doulton vase Having attracted the attention of the royal family, the Royal warrant  resulted in the company adopting bold new markings featuring a lion and crown and there new name, Royal Doulton. Henry Doulton son of John Doulton was the first potter to be knighted by Queen Victoria, Doulton was officaily granted the royal warrant (the right to use the title royal) by King Edward VII in 1901, the Royal Warrant is regarded as a mark of supreme excellence and quality, it can only be awarded and cannot be bought or sold.

Royal Doulton added Lambathware  translucent ware in the 1960’s it is tougher with quartz and feldspathic cornish stone componds included in the in the mix that contribute to the durability of the tableware,  enabling it to withstand heat and cold so it can be placed in the dishwasher or refrigerator.

This British company has made a wide variety of products in its almost 200 year history, from sewer pipes to character jugs. The original Lambeth factory was closed in 1956 due to emision laws and the Nile Street factory closed in the last quarter of 2005.  There is a move to return production to England, but for now almost all pieces are made in Indonesia with the exception of a few key items still being produced by the parent company Waterford Wedgwood in Barlaston. Today Royal Doulton provides a wide range of domestic tableware in Bone and Fine China.
